Competency Based Interviewing In the fluid and quickly changing business environment of today, it is essential to gain a clear and accurate understanding of future and current staff, and to obtain clear insight into their transferable skills and abilities. Often, to do this successfully, a competency based approach is essential. Competency Based Interviews (CBI’s) often form a critical part of such an assessment to gain insight into the past experience of staff, making use of the idea that ‘past performance is the best predictor of future performance’. A CBI provides an organisation with standardised, assessable information from candidates about their experience and how they have handled scenarios in the past which have been identified as relevant to the new position. Specifically a CBI provides candidates with the opportunity to share specific examples of behaviour that are relevant to the position. They also allow the interviewer the opportunity to probe and ask questions to better understand the situation or task, the actions taken and the end results. Quite simply put, if you are looking for a standardised and accurate way to assess and compare previous experience, then a Competency Based Interview is one of the best ways to do this.
